Explanation Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx (also valid for other Garmins)
This GPS device comes with a booklet which is in a lot. See it but
once found. The site MyTracks.me the tracks for this device is
important What exactly is a track?
Where a GPS device is very good at, is to determine what place on
earth. Both in latitude / longitude and altitude. The latter is a GPS
device also not quite as good. Most GPS devices to store a certain time
the current position (lat, lon, altitude and time). Usually this is
adjustable. The resulting points give the path that we have made. This
path, also called crumb trail, to the crumbs of Hansel and Gretel, in
English called a track.
The points of a track do not have any relationship except that there is a time sequence.
With most GPS devices so you can use the crumb trail to find your
way back. So much for trackback, it brings you to the start of the
distance traveled. This is nice if you're really lost. But if you do
not let it come naturally. Saving Tracks
The GPS device has a few places where a track is stored.
1. The tracklog part
2. The saved track
3. The SD card
1. The tracklog section. This section is automatically filled
with new data. You do not have to do. The amount of track points that
can be stored here, is limited. If that is full then the first track
points erased. Too bad. The device can store very many track points, so
for a single trip, or a weekend cycling in the Ardennes, there is no
problem. If the memory is still crowded than Garmin offers below the
above option "Save Track" (see 2). 2. The saved track. With a track to save memory is obviously
not played unless the track is stored maimed. And that is what Garmin
does: All Reest any time information is removed. It also limited the
number up to 500. Although it is intelligently done, but lost points
are really lost. Never use this option! Data lost, unless option 3. 3. The SD card. The Garmin allows for a big SD card in the
device stabbing. These are first put the card information (MapSource
does that for you). This would leave enough space for hundreds of
tracks. These tracks are complete: all points and time information. To
use this feature, you must do this once to express your device. This
goes through: menu>> tracks>> setup>> data card
setup. Put here the tick on the right place. The move of the computer
tracks of the SD card will not work with Mapsource. You need to set the
Garmin USB Mass Storage option (menu>> Setup>>
Interface>> USB Mass Storage). The data is now in the tree
(explorer) in windows to move to the computer. The data is stored
daily. In MapSource, the track then be polished (see 1.) This is bit
more complicated than downloading directly from the log memory. But it
works fine, and the data is not maimed.
In summary: Option 1 is the easiest: Just after every ride with
the MapSource cumbersome memory transfer. Option 3 is for long
vacations very convenient. Option 2: NEVER NEVER NEVER USE OPTION 2. Best practice
After a ride, or after a few rides, I connect the Garmin to the
computer and download the track to MapSource. Often more than tracks in
the file. I remove the track sections that are irrelevant, or toehoren
to another ride. A trip to the tracks that I heard possibly MapSource
flock together. This creates a track for each ride. I delete at the
beginning and end of the track even as the issues that are not
relevant. I also give the track a eenduige name. Then I save the track
as GPX file. The file can then be uploaded to Mytracks.
One pitfall is to operate between points manually track the
drawing. Mapsource provides that opportunity, but of course stores
information in no time (and no height). The result is a track with two
types: with and without time information. MyTracks ignores cases in
which time information for the entire track. Never Signing points so!
This information applies to most in my Garmin.
Routes?
The great confusion in GPS devices on the U.S. route. the track.
Described above is what a track: no more than a set of points on a map.
What is a route? Actually that is not more than one set of points on a
map. TomTom In that collection is only two points: the current location
and destination. TomTom calculates a route map from which he will
advise Chaffeur. Garmin also has that option. You need to have a
routable map. The standard map of garmin is routable, but it contains
so few roads that quickly on the highway cycle. The maximum number of
route points for use with a routable map is 50. That is too little for
a longer bike ride, but looking for Garmin itself points to using the
routable map. It is a surprise about which roads you sent. I would
rather own hands. So I never use this option. A nice feature of this
option is that the Garmin clearly indicate whether they should turn
right or left. In the offroad mode is not indicated.
The Garmin can also routes that are not linked to a map. Garmin
calls this off-road. The Garmin beeps in the offroad mode if you
approach a waypoint, but no arrow indicates the direction you need.
However, it is textually indicate which direction to go. This is a
confusing complex intersections.
In the offroad mode is a card not necessary but useful for
orientation. It is important that you have enough points route. Garmin
is only 250 points in the route offroad mode. This is usually
sufficient, but as neat as all auction items are appointed, and if it
is clear which way we should at the intersection. One route you can
manually draw, for example in MapSource. I find no fun, but you can
also see it as a part of the preparation of your trip. If you hand-draw
the route, then 250 points are usually sufficient.
You can also create a route by a track to convert. It all kink
points in the track into a route point. You will then quickly hundreds
of waypoints. Because the Garmin selchts 250 points can be divided into
one complete circuit section of routes 250 points, usually about 30-40
km per route section. You need every 30 to 40 km of route change here.
This can usually bicycle. That number of 250 may be different for each
GPS model. The tracks on GPStracks.nl be downloadable, all have one track,
no route. If you want a track bike, it is advisable to convert the
track into a route. Then through this site. Uploaded a track of a route
can be made. The number of route points can be filtered, so that a
reasonably compact circuit arises, when the bike is fine. One route of
100 km will usually consist of three sub-routes.
